B: The Beginning

Rating: 5 out of 5.

B: The Beginning is a Netflix original anime series that aired with 12 episodes in March of 2018. The series is a psychological thriller, suspense, and science fiction anime that is full of brutal crimes that one of the main protagonists is charged with solving. A very intelligent, rude, mess of a man, Keith Flick, who is in charge of figuring out who this “Killer B’ is. And like any good psychological thriller, Keith has his own ulterior motives for wanting to find Killer B. So we have Keith, but then we have Koku. A mysterious young man who seems to be involved in some way in everything that has been happening. Add in a mysterious mafia like organization with their own motives and plans and it is one solid anime worth watching.

I am on a mission to watch the anime series I had always wanted to or the ones that I have written down into lists but continuously pass over to watch (but not really watch) a series I had already watched. And this one just so happened to pop up in my Netflix queue at the perfect time. I figured it was now or never and ended up watching it in one sitting.

This was originally recommended to me by a friend ages ago now and I am so glad I finally watched it. It was one that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I was constantly surprised at all the plot twists. And when the real mastermind behind everything was revealed. When that person’s true motives were revealed…. I was genuinely shocked. And it was perfect. Another aspect of this anime I found really interesting and it made it that much better in my opinion was that it was telling the story lines of these two characters, Keith and Koku, in a parallel fashion. And it never felt as if the attention was on one more than the other. It was very well balanced.

Beyond the main characters, the side characters are just as interesting and integral to the main plot. I am usually a ‘meh’ kind of person with side characters in anime. Too often I feel as if they just threw someone random in there one detail or something insignificant or to just have them. But it isn’t like that in this anime. They play a huge role and only add substance to the story lines. Plus, the animation style is amazing. It was something I noticed more in this one, but I really love when it feels as if there are different art styles coming together in one. Not every character looks the same, they all have their own appearance and personality.

Overall, I am giving this anime a 5 out of 5 stars and am so excited that there is possibly a new season coming out sometime in 2021.

That is it for today’s post. I hope you enjoyed it and give B: The Beginning a watch when you have a chance! If you’ve already watched it let me know what you thought in the comments below.
