Hello all! Today I wanted to talk about movies. More specifically movies I love and think everyone should watch at some point in their lives. Everyone has their favorite movie. Their most favorite movie ever that never gets old. That they will always re-watch whenever the mood strikes them.
And there are movies that you maybe don’t rewatch regularly but that left a lasting impression on you. Be it good, bad, mind-blowing, or just satisfying. It actually took me some time to think about this list, and at the start, it was only three but I added one last minute just because I thought it deserved a mention. I think I did a good job crossing multiple genres and not sticking to any one type of movie. So without further ado here we go!
The Princess Diaries Series
Okay, yes I know that this is technically two different movies. But you can’t not watch them both. The first one is great but the second is even better. First of all, it has Dame Julie Andrews and she was Mary Poppins and that’s my favorite movie. (But it’s not on this list. That one is on a different list.) But it also has Anne Hathaway, who is a hoot. The comedy mixes very well with the heavier topics it talks about. Neither one overshadows the other. It has that perfect balance.
It is a coming-of-age story that while is a little extreme (she does become a princess) it still really resonates with a lot of people. She’s learning about who she is and where she wants to be and what she wants to do with her life. Learning to live with others’ expectations of herself and her own expectations of herself. You can’t make everyone happy. Start with making yourself happy and then go from there.
And in the second one, I think it’s quite similar but instead of the high school/ college era it’s adulthood and with where I am now I feel resonates even more. It still has that element of learning who you are and what you want for yourself. And not necessarily bowing down to the whims or expectations of others.
Completely different from Princess Diaries, Inception is a complete mind-bender. A science-fiction movie where lead actor, Leonardo DiCaprio is a criminal who gets into the subconscious of his marks to steal information. He gets into their dreams. their dreams. It’s just so much all the time, like what the f*ck is happening??
You never know what is going on. Which may make you think it would be too confusing and frustrating but it’s not. Instead, it just makes you keep thinking. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. On the tips of your toes. Plus the cast of this movie is just whew… Lovely. Simply lovely… to look at. hehe. It’s got Leo of course, but then there is Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and so many more.
Add some beautiful set designs and an interesting plot you’re left with a movie that leaves you thinking long after the movie has ended.
Howls Moving Castle
A Studio Ghibli classic. My favorite Studio Ghibli so far. I have watched it so many different times and it never gets old or boring for me. Starting with the animation, it’s absolutely beautiful. No detail is missed or overlooked. Nothing is spared. If you have watched any one of the Studio Ghibli movies then you know how exquisite the films are. And then add in the wonderful cast of characters and intriguing plot you have a movie that is just incredible.
I have a big ass crush on Howl and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t. And I can’t blame them. I mean come on! He’s gorgeous. And looks a little like Harry Styles. And then add in a spunky young lady named Sophie and an annoyed spark of fire named Calcifer, what could be better.
Plus there is a little romance in this one! A cute one. A soft one. And you know I love a cute and soft romance story that doesn’t overpower the rest of the story. There is a lot more than just a romance in this one and I think the fact that it doesn’t just focus on that aspect means a lot. It becomes a journey of learning for Sophie as she learns to live with a curse placed on her and navigate the sporadic actions of Howl after she invites herself to live with them in their walking castle. Add in the adventure and thrilling fighting bits with magic all around it, well wow. It is so so good.
The Addams Family
I am specifically talking about the 1991 film with Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, and Christina Ricci. The iconic, macabre dark humor filled movie that is an absolute masterpiece. Seriously, if you haven’t watched this movie at least once, what have you been doing with your life?
I love the family. Sure, they are a little wacky and kooky and just plain weird. But they are devoted to each other and extremely overprotective of each other. And don’t even get me started on Morticia and Gomez and their love for each other. Who wouldn’t want to have a relationship like that? One where your partner is so in love with you the simplest actions sets them off into a tirade about who amazing you are? Okay, maybe it is a little obsessive but it is a movie. It’s not real no matter how much I wish it was, so I could be asked to be adopted by them.
It’s hilarious. From start to finish the over the top and extravagant nature of it all is amusing and wonderful in nature. Like I just freaking love this movie. And is perfect to watch cause spooky season is just getting started.
And there we have it! Four movies I think everyone should watch at least once. I think I did a good job of providing a variety of different types of movies. And I hope that I at least sparked your interest in checking one of them out. Let me know what movie(s) you think everyone should at least try in the comments below.
