sci-fi anime review and recommendations – part 1

Hey guys! Today I am venturing into sci-fi animes! Only two for today’s post as I don’t really watch that many that could be called sci-fi! I hope you enjoy it!

Sword Art Online (Arc 1)

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Season 1 Arc 1 14 Episodes Sub / Dub

I finally sat down and watched the show that so many people talk about and one I didn’t think I was going to ever watch. ‘Sword Art Online’ t is an adventure and science fiction series that started in 2002 with a series of novels. Which was then turned into a series of light novels that started in 2009 and is still currently being published and then there are some mangas and so many animes series too. Like it is almost confusing trying to figure out where to begin. I mean maybe not since the anime is broken up into series then seasons. Moving on! The series follows Kitito, a teenage player of Sword Art Online (SAO) who gets trapped into the game until it is beaten. And each following arc/ season also has an online video game element to it.

To clarify, I am only talking about Arc 1 of season 1. I started Arc 2 but have not finished it yet. So I liked it. I did. But there was nothing special that made me go wow! I freaking love this and I need to watch it all right now. I can totally understand why a lot of people think this anime is overrated. I liked the fight sequences. I liked that they didn’t make the lead female a weakly or like totally dependent on Kirito. But what really made me like… ugh… was the time skips. Like what a clever way to show time passing but they felt so awkward and then they were so quick and just sort of happened so I missed a few of them. Overall I am happy that I finally managed to watch at least some of it after so many years of not. But I can’t say I’ll end up finishing it completely.

The Irregular at Magic High School

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Season 1 26 Episodes Sub / Dub

‘The Irregular at Magic High School’ is an action, fantasy, and science fiction series that was originally a novel series from 2008-2011. It was then adapted into a light novel series published from 2011 to 2020 with several manga adaptations. The anime series was originally produced in 2014 and the second season was announced for the fall of 2020 (which I am excited for). It follows the Shiba siblings who aren’t actually siblings? Are they, aren’t they? They have just entered First High School and are separated based on magical abilities. Tatsuya is seemingly unskilled compared to his sister Miyuki who has an overwhelming gift with magic. Enter some side characters who add major comic relief it is a decent anime.

The one major downside to this anime is that there is a lot of background information that is missing. Which I think maybe in the novels or manga series that they just couldn’t fit into the anime. But it is a hindrance. Included with some overly complicated explanations of how magic works which come of as very scientific and logical. Which maybe isn’t a bad thing but I would get bored when they started getting into it. I liked that within the first season there were like three distinct storylines with really fun characters. Plus there are some really great fight scenes… When they happen. Overall this was a solid anime in my opinion.

I realized that I don’t watch many animes that are considered sci-fi so this was kind of fun for me. Sorry that this week’s post is a little shorter than normal, I’ve been busier than expected but hopefully, I will be back to normal by next week. I hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know what animes under this genre you like or recommend!

  1. Astra Lost In Space is a fun, sci-fi anime that I’d recommend. It’s got a great ensemble cast of characters and an exciting plot with a bit of a mystery element. Plus it’s not very long, so it’s easy to get into.
