sport anime reviews/recommendations part 1

Hello guys! Here is part one of some sport anime reviews and recommendations!

Free! Iwatobi Swim Club

Rating: 5 out of 5.

3 seasons & 3 Movies Sub / Dub

So if you’ve heard about sports anime’s, you’ve definitely heard about Free! Iwatobi Swim Club. It is centered around Haruka Nanase an incredibly talented swimmer in high school. It follows him through the creation and development of the swim team at his high school and meeting up with old friends and rivals.

Let’s just be honest right up front. This anime is… pretty. Like so pretty. I have actually only watched the first season. It wasn’t until recently that I found out that there are more seasons. And movies! So this rating is solely based on the first season. I thought the plot of this season was really really good. I didn’t think it was over the top or completely unrealistic, rather it had a nice balance. The depictions of the relationships between the swimmers at Iwatobi High School, the friendships and all that, is one of my favorite parts. It just feels so real and it’s fun. So much fun. I watched this one subbed and am planning on catching up on the missed seasons.

Yuri!!! on Ice

Rating: 5 out of 5.

12 episodes Sub / Dub

I watched this in one night. One night. It was so amazing. I had heard a lot about this show from friends and other people but never seemed to just sit down and watch it. And then I did and holy crap it is so so good. Yuri!!! on Ice (yes there are three exclamation points lol) follows 23-year-old ice skater Yuri Katsuki after another defeat at a competition that has him questioning everything. He ends up going home to hide away and think about what to do next. And what should happen next but his skating Idol showing up at his family’s hot spring stating that he will now be Yuri’s coach.

I grew up watching ice skating competitions on TV and I was stunned with how wonderful and pretty the animation and skating were. One of my favorite things about this anime was the characters and their inner monologues. They were so colorful and unique. And as a bonus the developing relationship between Victor and Yuri was beautiful. I watched this anime in one night and would do it again in a heartbeat. I also watched it dubbed on Funimation and I recommend you do as well. Seriously love this anime so so much. Watch it!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

4 seasons & 4 movies Sub / Dub

Here is another popular sports animes. And this one is all about volleyball! This one had been sitting in my Netflix queue for forever before I finally hit play. I also had been seeing a lot of completion videos popping up in my YouTube feed for it so it felt like it was time. Same as with Free! I have only watched the first season but am planning on watching the rest. Haikyu!! follows Hinata as he joins the Karasuno’s high school volleyball team and learns to navigate working with a team and working with someone he disliked extremely.

This series is so funny. The comedy aspect just adds so much to this anime helps balance the seriousness and intensity of the matches. I was super thankful that it took the time and explained and described the different positions. Also the changing relationship between Hinata and Kageyama showed really good development. It didn’t get get better over night. It didn’t just flip a switch and change. It was gradual, like an actual relationship. I watched this one subbed on Netflix.

So that’s it for part 1! Also what is the deal with exclamation points in sports animes? I am amused 😄. If you have an recommendations or one you want me to review let me know in the comments below!

  1. Liked all the anime you mentioned except for Free 😦 It didn’t get me at all
There are tons of girls sport anime! Bit lot of them are full of fanservice… like a beach volley one… there will be a new sport anime with girls as protagonist on October with Climbing as the topic.
A Sport Anime with girls as protagonists that I suggest you to watch is for sure Hanebado! It is about Badminton.
