Why I Don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions Anymore

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful New Years. I told myself I wasn’t gonna write a post on new years resolutions, cause I really just hate them. But here I am. Writing a post about why I don’t make new years resolutions anymore and what I do instead.

The main reason why I don’t make new years resolutions is that they have never worked for me. I have never been able to stick to them for longer than maybe a month. And I just never liked them. I always thought that they were crap that I was forced to take part in even when I didn’t have anything I wanted to ‘work on’ or ‘change’ in my life.

They never seemed to last and they always seemed to be the same things repeated over and over again. Lose weight, exercise more, eat better, do this, do that. And that is part of my problem of new years resolutions. I can’t find the right ones that make me pursue them. Yes, they are great for some people and absolutely do them if you like them and if they work for you. I don’t want to sound like I don’t think you should make them if you like them. By all means, do what works for you.

They don’t work for me. So I don’t make them. Or at least I don’t call them new years resolutions…

I like having goals. Even if I suck at goals, cause I am always just a little too ambitious on paper for my laziness in reality. I like to set myself goals that I can work towards or in the case of this year, something a little more adventurous for me, a lifestyle change. They key here is that I work towards my goals or life changes. Nothing happens over night, it takes work and setting the goals or changes is a reminder that it is not going to change over night, but rather that it is something that I am going to get there one day, that I am doing what I need to do. That I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

Now, I’ll be honest with you. I am still not the best at keeping up with these goals. I still fall off and give up and struggle. But I last longer than I did with those ‘new years resolutions’. And I have finally gotten to the point in my life where I want to make these changes. I want to make the effort, so I am.

Long story short… I make new years resolutions, I just don’t call them new years resolutions. (I think I just have an issue with the name.) So they are still new years resolutions just under another name. Maybe I’ll even start calling them intentions… Hmm. There might be something there.

I have decided to make short-term goals for myself. Kind of like monthly goals that will keep me moving towards a ‘larger end goal’ of sorts.
For 2019 my intentions cover 4 main areas; Self Care, Social Media, School, and Language Learning. I’ve created a habit tracker that I am determined to maintain month by month. And a month by month syllabus for my language learning. Once school starts I’ll have a clearer picture of what there is to do for my courses.

I work better with shorter time frames. It is easier that way for me to visualize accomplishing them and finishing them. So I’ll follow a similar outline for the months for my goals that will progress like my language learning. And for others, I am hoping to build good and steady habits that help me stay consistent.

This year will be different. This year will be a good year. This is my year. I hope you have a good year and I’ll see you soon!
